2024 Trending Holiday Decorating Styles

2024 Trending Holiday Decorating Styles

If you've been to our Open House in October, you know the store is transformed into a Christmas wonderland. It's full of sparkles, full of greenery, and full of holiday inspiration. The goal is to showcase a variety of styles so you can see how to decorate your home.

This magic doesn't happen overnight. It demands an amazing level of creativity but also research into trending styles. Months before the event, we start watching videos on current holiday trending styles, pay attention to influencers and see what they are talking about, and think about how we incorporate daily decorating with holiday looks.

What trends did we see this year? Let's dive in...

Natural woods and greens - Neutrals, especially using outdoor color of wood tones and greenery, is very popular with interior design right now. Watch the Pottery Barn instagram feed and you'll see lots of natural wood in both furniture and home design.

This has certainly influenced holiday decorating. Lanterns with natural wood, thick evergreen garlands, traditional elements (such as snowmen) made of natural wood, pinecones, and anything giving a nod to nature thrives in this theme. Greens mixed with creams or light browns are a way to focus color choices.

How do traditional elements work into this theme? Santas, snowmen, pops of reds/cranberry are up in the air. For many years, those were important elements but with neutrals being so popular year round, these pops can be added or left out.

If you are a neutral lover, this design is all you. If you are looking for something clean looking, not fussy, and peaceful, this is a great way to decorate.

Gingerbread - You heard that right... gingerbread is taking instagram by storm this year. Traditional brown with white trim is available on table scapes, in decor, and in almost anything you can imagine. If you want more, this is your year! Gingerbread holiday decor has so many options from big houses to sit beside a fireplace, little gingerbread people to add to design, or entire train set to sit on a mantle.

Colors and styles are wildly diverse. There is traditional brown, cute pastels, natural patterns and more.

Candy and gingerbread have been a unique decorating style for years. We had a customer in the other day who said their grandmother has been decorating this way for decades. They were so excited to see this taking centerstage.

If you are looking for something whimsical, fun, and cheery, this is a great decorating option. It also adds well into other themes and brings a bit of fun into other decorating styles.

Get Classy with Mix Metals - In years past, we've had to choose either gold or silver. Not this year! Trending is mixing the metals to create a beautiful holiday scene. One of the great things about this theme is that you can totally go all in or create simple, understated highlights.

A full decorating style with mixed metals can encompass any area of your home. You could decorate with all things metal from stocking holders, reindeers, vessels, candle holders, ornaments and more. This creates a stunning visual impact that can be quite a showstopper.

If you aren't interested in making a big statement with mixed metals, highlights can add beauty and holiday spirit in an understated way. Setting the table with gold chargers to peek on the table, adding gold ornaments to the tree, or simply using metals to add sparkle to the room is an elegant and festive decision.

Traditional Christmas - This theme will always be part of our holidays. Christmas reds and greens, Santas and reindeers, balls and presents, snowflakes and nutcrackers will be part of the holiday for a long time.

There are many great reasons to lean into this style.

  • It's traditional and the look people love during the season
  • You can always find something new and fun to add
  • So many ways to express this style from Santas to more trendy gnomes in traditional colors

The holiday season is a wonderful time to choose a style that excites you. Looking to trending holiday styles is a great way to focus your look, get inspired, and keep you cohesive. Enjoy and have fun!
